As part of BHP’s expansion of their Olympic Dam mining operations into the Southern Mine Area (SMA) of South Australia, Nettlefold Projects was contracted as the Lead Electrical, Instrumentation & Control Engineer for the Whenan Shaft and Underground Rail Rehabilitation Feasibility study. This project highlights the significant role of engineering and consulting firms in supporting major mining infrastructure developments.
In this role, we recommended the most effective solutions for this Copper, Uranium and Gold mining asset, driving project outcomes and assisting the planning team through comprehensive, structured reviews of the Schedules of Work.
This involved the assessment of all electrical infrastructure of the Wheenan Shaft to identify what could be repurposed, as well as what new installations were needed. These recommendations were aligned to a Costing Plan and assessed for compliance with Aus Standards, Mining Standards and BHP standards, before being presented in a Feasibility Study to the BHP Capital Works team to assist with the cost-effective expansion of their operations.
